Removing barriers to innovation in the treatment of Kidney disease

Lead UX Researcher, 2021

Context:

The American Society of Nephrology is the world's largest professional society devoted to the study of kidney disease. Composed of over 20,000 physicians and scientists, ASN promotes expert patient care, advances medical research, and educates the renal community.

The Kidney Health Initiative was established in September 2012 between the American Society of Nephrology and the FDA. The Kidney Innovation Accelerator (KidneyX) is a public-private partnership between HHS and the ASN to accelerate innovation in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of kidney diseases.

The challenge:

Navigating the dynamics of a public private partnership to generate broad consensus and a validated set of inclusive solution principles.

Solution:

Designed and led primary research for American Society of Nephrology, Kidney Health Initiative, and KidneyX Prize to develop a strategy to increase innovation in the treatment of kidney disease including patient, physician, innovator, and regulator perspectives.

Results:

Helped redefine product innovation evaluation metrics for ASN to spark innovation across a diverse array of contentious public and private entities.

Established new evaluation criteria for Kidney X Prize combining patient-centered metrics with technological specifications.

Contributed qualitative research to the 2022 KHI: Human Centered Design Toolkit for Kidney Failure
